After beach lifeguard training delivered in Egypt during September sources have revealed a rescue has already occurred making all the training worthwhile. Interested in what happened during the Egypt project? Then please click here to read the blog post ‘RLSS UK lifeguards teach lifesaving skills in Egypt’.

On the 19th October 2011, Anees Ismiael Abdella, who was involved within the intensive project, performed a life saving rescue using the skills he learnt from RLSS UK Beach TAs.

Anees who works for the Royal Albatros Hotel, rescued an elderly man from drowning. Anees spotted the elderly gentleman struggling to swim more than 100 meters away from the beach. He realised the man was in danger and reacted instantly. After extracting him from the sea and onto the beach. Anees quickly observed the colour around the gentleman’s lips had begun to turn blue (cyanosis).
Anees used the techniques he learned during his training with RLSS UK TAs and began CPR on the casualty. The colour started to return in the man’s lips, and he began to breathe. Anees then placed him in the recovery position.

Anees Ismaiel Abdella said,

“I noticed a dark blue colour spreading fast on his lips…after his normal colour returned I placed him in the recovery position after normal breathing had started.”

After the successful resuscitation it was later discovered the elderly man suffered from a heart problem, due to his age, and this is why he began to struggle in the sea.

RLSS UK is very proud of Anees Ismaiel Abdella and thank him for helping RLSS UK in ‘Safeguarding lives in, on and near water’. Additionally, big thanks go to RLSS UK TAs Phil Drew (lead trainer), Olaf Mather, Vinny Staunton and Jason Dodman who trained Anees and the fellow 99 lifeguards. The project funded through the Ministry of Tourism and managed by the Human Resources Development & Training Unit of the Egyptian Tourism Federation, clearly has been proven to be a worthwhile cause, with successful outcomes.
