RLSS UK has a range of Instructing and Coaching qualifications, which provide a development pathway for new teachers, and ensure standardised teaching of the Lifesaving awards.

Young Leaders Award

Young Leaders Award - Introduction

The Young Leaders Award is an introductory leadership award of the Royal Lifesaving Society UK. The award provides a soft introduction to the skills of leadership, which can be used in every aspect of Lifesaving, as well as in the candidate's personal lives.

The Award is aimed at young people aged 12 years or over and presents a great opportunity for them to develop fundamental leadership skills in a safe, familiar environment alongside a qualified trainer.

Event organisation provides the opportunity for Young Leaders to work in teams where they quickly develop confidence in leadership, teamwork, planning and effective communication.

Fun and interactive, the sessions take place both in the classroom and in the pool, giving candidates the opportunity to lead and take part in a range of lifesaving games and activities.

The Young Leader Award is fully resourced with Candidates and Tutors having targeted looseleaf workbooks, which will make the course easier for both parties to work through. The whole course is also supported by a PowerPoint presentation on CD to make the course easy for the Tutor to deliver.

Young Leaders have the opportunity to follow a range of pathways provided through involvement in lifesaving; from teaching to officiating the Young Leader Award provides the perfect grounding.

Aim:

  • To inspire Young People to for fill their potential
  • Raise Lifesaving profile within a Young Leadership role
  • Inspire Young Leaders to get actively involved with Lifesaving
  • Help provide additional support for Rookie Festivals
  • To help develop generic leaderships skills in a Lifesaving environment
  • Identify potential pathways for Young Leaders in Lifesaving

Target audience

  • Age 12 – 16 years

This may include:

  • Young people assisting with local lifesaving clubs and classes as a volunteer
  • Young people interested in developing leadership skills
  • Students at specialist sports colleges and secondary schools to enable them to work with younger age group students

Course structure

  • 6 hours – this may be delivered as 1x6, 2x3, 3x2 hours sessions or within usual club sessions

Certificate

  • Once a candidate has completed the course including supporting the running of a lifesaving event a RLSS UK Young Leaders Certificate will be issued upon receipt of candidate registration and course attendance form at RLSS UK

Funding Implications

  • Each candidate pack cost £12.50 to cover administration costs, candidate resources, certification and post course support

Tutors

  • Tutors may be lifesaving Rookie Instructors (or above), school teachers, level 2 coaches, Sport Leader UK Tutors, ASA teachers or coaches or an responsible adult who has had appropriate training in delivery of this course (other prior learning or experience maybe taken into account, please contact River House if you feel you have a suitable qualification).
  • Tutors will need to have details of local clubs or classes and events. Tutors must also be aware of the legal responsibilities of anyone providing activities for young people.

  • After completing the course it is recommended that the Young Leaders get actively involved with a local lifesaving club.

How to Become a Young Leader Tutor

How to Become a Young Leader Tutor

The Young Leader Award is the exciting introductory leadership award of the Royal Lifesaving Society UK. The award provides a soft introduction to the skills of leadership which can be used in every aspect of Lifesaving, as well as in the candidate's personal lives.

To become a Young Leader Tutor you need to ensure that you have at least one of the following prerequisites:

  • Rookie Instructor
  • RLSS UK Instructor
  • TA (Any discipline)
  • Qualified School Teacher (including NQT)
  • Level Two Coach
  • Sport Leader Tutor
  • ASA Level 2 Teacher or Coach

If you have one or more of the list above you can buy a Young Leader Tutor Pack (from Lifesavers Direct) and using the enclosed form register as a Young Leader Tutor.

 

Assistant Lifesaving Instructor

Assistant Lifesaving Instructor

This is the introductory qualification to the Instructor Programme. The syllabus trains the key Lifesaving teaching skills and holders of the award are able to assist with the teaching of Lifesaving skills, knowledge and awards.

The prerequisites for the qualification are to hold current RLSS UK Membership, and hold a current Life Support 3 by the completion of the Active Participation section of the course.

Rookie Lifeguard Instructor

Rookie Lifeguard Instructor

This qualification is specific to the teaching of the Rookie Lifeguard awards. Those candidates who cannot qualify through approved prior learning channels will develop a comprehensive knowledge of the Rookie Lifeguard Programme and will be able to show the essential Lifesaving, teaching, class management, and health and safety skills and knowledge required to teach the Rookie Lifeguard awards.

This qualification is specific to teaching the Survive and Save Programme Awards. Candidates develop a thorough understanding learning styles and teaching methods, learning through practical use of the Survive and Save Programme Instructor resources both in the classroom and in the swimming pool.

The prerequisites for the qualification are to hold current RLSS UK Membership, and hold a current Life Support 3 by the completion of the course.

Lifesaving Instructor Tutor

Lifesaving Instructor Tutor

This qualification is specific to teaching of the Lifesaving Instructor Course and the Survive and Save Programme Awards. Candidates add to the their knowledge learning and teaching by developing their understanding of the specific needs of adult learners, feedback, and training needs analysis.

The prerequisite for this qualification is the Lifesaving Instructor qualification.

Open Water Instructor

Open Water Endorsement (Open Water Instructor)

The Open Water Endorsement is required by all Instructors teaching the open water awards (beach and inland). Candidates learn about the hazards and risks of the open water environment, open water risk assessment, Society open water policies, and other safety requirements of open water activity.

The prerequisite for this qualification is the Lifesaving Instructor qualification.

 

Lifesaving Trainer Assessor

Lifesaving Trainer Assessor

Holders of this qualification are qualified to train and assess the Heritage Senior Award Programme, Community Outreach Programme, and the Lifesaving 1-2-3 Programme. Trainer Assessors can also bolt-on further training qualifications to their Trainer Assessor qualification, including NRASTC, Pool, Beach, ELS, Rookie Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor, and more.

Lifesaving Mentor

Lifesaving Mentor

In addition to the training roles of the Trainer Assessor qualification, Mentors have the additional responsibility of mentoring Probationary Trainer Assessors through their probationary period, up to the point of certifying them as competent.

 

National Trainer Assessor/Staff National Trainer Assessor

National Trainer Assessor/Staff National Trainer Assessor

Staff and National Trainer Assessors deliver the Trainer Assessor and Lifesaving Instructor Tutor courses. In addition to this Staff and National Trainer Assessors also perform the duties of Mentor and Trainer Assessor.
